Digital SLR
To properly answer "What is a Digital SLR?" we to understand a bit about the mechanics of a Single Lens Reflex camera.
Here is a simple diagram;

1. Light passes through the lens and strikes a mirror (green).
2. The mirror reflects the light up to a focusing screen
3. Light passes through the focusing screen and enters a block of glass called pentaprism (orange)
4. The pentaprism reflects the image so that you can see it in the viewfinder
5. when you take the photo, the mirror flips up and a shutter (blue) opens the exposes the digital sensor (red) to the light.
This is a great example of what-you-see-is-what-you-get. by using the viewfinder you can precisely compose your image and adjust the focus.
Why Choose a DSLR Camera
1. Image Quality - DSLRs have larger size of image sensors which allows for larger pixel sizes.
2. Adaptability - have a wide array of interchangealbe lenses
3. Speed - fast in starting up, focusing and shutter lag.
4. Optical viewfinder - basically a what you see is what you get kind of equipment.

Digital SLR Camera
A Digital Single-Lens Reflex camera (Digital SLR or DSLR) is a digital camera that uses a mechanical mirror system and pentaprism to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera.
DSLRs are preferred by professional still photographers because they allow accurate preview of framing close to the moment of exposure, and because DSLRs allow the user to choose from a variety of interchangeable lenses.
DSLR cameras are increasingly becoming a type of camera that is in the reach of an average photographer as the prices fall and as manufacturers develop more user friendly models.

Digital SLRs are versatile, you can take photos of evarything from sleeping babies to race cars and you'll never be limited by your camera. With an SLR in your hands you can rest assured that you'll only miss great photo opportunities because you were not prepared, not because your camera was too slow.
